Video interviews may quickly become the norm in our current climate. For most of us, this is probably a totally new experience. Unlike conventional phone interviews, there’s a whole new list of protocols and etiquette you may not be aware of.
First adjust your camera so it’s looking down slightly above your eye line. If you’re using your laptop or phone, prop it up on something to reach the proper height. Leaving it on the table creates a bad angle because the interviewer will be looking up your nose.
Next comes lighting. Make sure you have ample lighting in front of you with a darker background so you don’t become a silhouette and the interviewer can’t see your face.
The background is important but you don’t have to make a whole production out of it. Just keep the background simple and tidy. There’s no need to hide the room with a hanging bed sheet.
Eliminate the background distractions. This means street noise, busy windows, music, TV, pets and even children.
Test your equipment. Call a friend or colleague over video to get a second opinion. If you have to download any software for the interview platform, make sure everything is updated and working properly..
Finally, have a glass of water within reach (but out of frame), and be conscious of your posture during the interview.
One of my early mentors in the headhunting game preached to every candidate before the interview, “It’s not always the person who know the most who get the job, but rather the ones who best prepare for the meeting.”
Good luck!
